Luiz Suarez Bids Emotional Farewell To The Atletico Madrid Fans, Having Played His Last Home Game For The Club.

Luis Suarez has bids an emotional goodbye to the Atletico Madrid fans following their 1-1 La Liga draw with Sevilla on Sunday night.

The Spanish club, confirmed prior to the game that Suárez will leave the club on a free transfer in June, as his contract won’t be extended.

Atlético chose to reveal the forward's imminent departure before the conclusion of the season so that he could be honoured at their last league game at Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Simone's men headed into the game with their Top Four place already secure for Champions League football next season.

Simeone substituted Suarez off to a resounding applause on the 65 minutes in Madrid and the fans showed him real gratitude at full time.

The Uruguayan forward joined the Rojiblancos in September 2020 on a two-year contract under surprising circumstances, having spent the previous six years at rival Barcelona who termed him surplus to requirements after Ronald Koeman joined the Catalan club.

Suarez went on to score 21 league goals in his debut season which helped Atletico Madrid win the La Liga title last year.

"I had a talk with Luis in mid-November," Diego Simeone said in a press conference, when asked about Suarez's position at the club.

"It was long, hard, sincere. We both talked about what each of us saw going forward, and what we are going to need from him.

"From that talk until today, we've each respected absolutely everything we talked about.

"I am grateful to Luis Suarez, Last season was tremendous. This season he is still the top scorer.

"He will score goals until he dies," said a grateful Simeone of his forward."

Though he is not having the minutes he expected, this season has been somewhat different for Suarez, compared to last.

The 35-year-old has still managed to score 11 LaLiga goals and two assists this season, despite being in the shadows of Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix and even Angel Correa.

His reduced role this season has persuaded the board not to offer him an extension, having scored 34 goals in total just 81 games across all competitions.

Suarez is expected to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks and he could return to Uruguay, but not considering MLS bids as of today according to reports, his priority is to continue in Europe.
