2020 US Open: Dominic Thiem Defeats Alexander Zverev To Win His First-Ever Grand Slam Title.

Unbelievable scenes at the 2020 US Open, as Domininc Thiem wins his first ever Grand Slam title after making an all-time come back from two sets down to defeat Alexander Zverev in five sets.

For the first time since 2014 there is a new Grand Slam champion in the tennis world, which is not the big 3 named Roger Federer, Rafeal Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

Thiem beats a tough opponent in Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in an incredible match on Sunday, which lasted for over four hours.

The 27-year-old Austrian tennis star cemented his name in tennis history by becoming the first player to win the US Open men’s singles Grand Slam final from two sets down in the Open Era, and the fifth player to do so in a Grand Slam final since Gaudio d Corcia in the 2004 French Open. 

He also becomes the 150th man to win a Grand Slam men’s singles title, and the second Austrian man to win a Grand Slam title, first was Thomas Muster in the Roland-Garros in 1995.

Prior to his fourth career major final on Sunday, the World No.3 was clearly favorite to win his maiden major title against first-time ever Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev who is currently ranked No.7 in the world.

Thiem had lost his three career previous major finals so far - two of which came at Roland Garros and the other in Melbourne.

Just this year, he has beaten Zverev in the 2020 Australian Open semifinal in four sets, and has won all three of his Grand Slam clashes with Alexander.

Speaking on-the court after his victory Dominic Thiem said: 

"I'd also like to start with you, Sascha. We started to know each other in 2014 when we were both ranked 100th or something and straight away we developed a great friendship.

"Then in 2016, I think, our great rivalry started again and we made great things happen on and off the court.

"It is amazing how far our journey brought us.

"I wish we could have two winners today, we both deserve it."

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old German Zverev puts his name in the record books as the first German Grand Slam men’s singles finalist since Rainer Schuettler at the 2003 Australian Open, as well as the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Novak Djokovic, 23, at the 2010 US Open.

This marks the third straight year Zverev has improved his US Open performance, having reached the second round in 2017, the third round in 2018, and the fourth round in 2019, and now the runner-up in 2020.

"I don't know where to start. I'd like to congratulate Dominic on the first of many Grand Slam titles. It was a tough battle - I wish you would have missed a little more... Zverev said.

"Here I am giving a runner-up speech. Thanks to my team for sticking with me - the last two years have not been easy - hopefully one day we will lift this trophy.

"I want to thank my parents. I wish one day I can bring the trophy home."
