Liverpool have confirned that midfielder Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Spaniard who just joined the Reds this summer from German club side Bayern Munich, has become the latest player in the Premier League to have contacted the Covid-19.

He had been omitted from the squad in the club's 3-1 victory against Arsenal on Monday night, and the massive 7-2 victory against Lincoln City in the League Cup last Thursday.

Thiago is now expected to quarantine for 10-14 days in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus.

According to a statement released today via the club's website; Liverpool confirmed that the 29-year-old had only showed mild symptoms and will continue to follow the safety protocols pertaining to the same, with the player eager to clarify the situation.

"Thiago has exhibited minor symptoms of the virus but is in good health and is getting better"....reads the statement.

"The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time."

"It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a Covid-19 test," added the first-team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also expects that his new signing would not feature for the club till after next month international break.

The former Barcelona player made his Liverpool debut against Chelsea last week, as he came on for Captain Jordan Henderson at half-time and produced an sensational display at Stamford Bridge, which saw the Reds emerge 2-0 winners over Chelsea.

Liverpool next game is the fourth round League Cup clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Thursday, and Sunday's visit to play Aston Villa in the Premier League.
