Lionel Messi breaks record having posted a photo of  him celebrating Argentina's World Cup win, which has now become the most-ever liked post on the photo-sharing platform Instagram, with over 58 million likes (and counting!).

The Argentine captain who led his team to their first World Cup triumph in 36 years, and the third time in the country's history on Sunday at Lusail Stadium, following a penalty shoot-out win over defending champions France.

Messi's collection of 10 pictures on Instagram has surpassed the mere picture of an egg which was the previous record holder of the most-liked post, with 55.7 million likes when last verified by Guinness World Records.

There was a lot of speculation about who was behind the @world_record_egg Instagram account and how it managed to attract so many likes so quickly.

According to reports, Some said it was a marketing ploy from a large company that had bought followers - but British advertising executive Chris Godfrey has since claimed he created it, along with two others, and that their sole purpose was to get as many likes as possible.

The PSG star captioned the pictures, “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!

“So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still didn’t fall, I can’t believe it……

“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We proved once again that when Argentinians fight together and are united we are able to achieve our aims.

“The merit belongs to this group, which is above individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also one of all Argentinians.

“We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’ll see each other very soon.”

Before the World Record Egg had the most liked post on Instagram, influencers Kylie  Jenner's photo of her newborn daughter Stormi in 2018, and Kendall Jenner in 2015 both held this record, as well as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West wedding photo  in 2014, Beyoncé's pregnancy announcement photo in 2017.

Will Smith and Justin Bieber jointly set the record of most liked post back in 2014 with 1.5 million likes.

The Messi World Cup-winning post, also surpassed fellow football rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s post from last month which was an advert for Louis Vuitton ahead of the World Cup in which the clubless Portuguese captain was seen playing a chess  game with Messi, accumulating 41.9 million likes.

Ronaldo recently became the first person to reach 500 million followers on Instagram; the most followed person on the app with currently 519M followers, while Messi just hit 400M and counting, he had 397 million followers before his World Cup glory, but in less then one day he had gained more than 3 million.

With the success of his latest gallery on Instagram, Messi has yet another record to add to his collection. Guinness World Records posted a series of records broken by Messi.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, had surpassed Germany's Lothar Matthäus for the record of most World Cup matches played, with 26 - as well as four other records:
