Barcelona Are Crowned Copa Del Rey Champions For A Record 31st Time (Highlights).

Barcelona are crowned the 2021 Copa del Rey champions, followimg a massive 4-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday Evening.

Barca earned the Spanish King's Cup trophy for the 31st time in history, and extending their record as the most successful club in the domestic competition since three years after their last success in the competition.

The Blaugana side have utterly dominated the tournament in recent years reaching 10 of the last 13 Copa del Rey finals, winning seven of them since 2009. Four of those cup triumphs came consecutively, between 2015 and 2018.

Barcelona cruised to a fine finish over Bilbao having been frustrated in the first half of the game, with all their goals coming the second half of the final at La Cartuja Stadium, Seville.

Barcelona scored four goals in 12 minutes with French star Antoine Griezmann opening scoring on the night in the 60th minute with a left-footed shot in the near post to give them the lead.

Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong doubled the gap with a diving header in the 63rd minute.

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi netted the third in the 68th minute driving from his own half with an assist from De Jong.

Messi scored his second four minutes later, sweeping in Jordi Alba's cross to seal the win.

The victory gives Barca their first trophy under manager Ronald Koeman and their first silverware since the 2018/19 season.

"To win a title is important for me," said Koeman after the triumph.

"Despite the changes at the club and the young players, at Barca you have to always fight for trophies.

"We have the first one and now we are going to fight to the last game in La Liga."

This would be a second Copa del Rey success for the 58-year-old Dutch manager Ronald Koeman in his managerial career having lifted the trophy with Valencia in 2008.

Koeman's chances of remaining as Barcelona manager for next season has now been boosted following the triumph.

His side currently sits third in the La Liga standings, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

The defeat for Athletic Bilbao means that they have lost their second Copa Del Rey final in two weeks, after they lost to local rivals Real Sociedad 1-0 in the delayed 2020 final on April 3.

The 2020 final was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Athletic Bilbao wait for a Copa number 24 trophy continues, the Los Leones are the Copa's second-most decorated club with 23 wins, but they haven’t tasted success in Spain's domestic cup since back in 1984 when they beat Barca in an infamous final.

While rivals Real Madrid who have more Spanish league titles and more European Cups/Champions Leagues than any other club (34 and 13) respectively, are only the third-most successful club in the Copa del Rey.

The Los Blancos have won the competition just 19 times, with two of those coming this century in 2011 and 2014.

Atletico Madrid are fourth-most successful side winning it 10 times, and Valencia 8 times champions.
