How New UEFA Champions League Rule Could Affect Chelsea, Arsenal

Despite widespread opposition from fans and domestic leagues, the Champions League as we know it is going to undergo a contentious makeover. 

The original idea for the revised model, which will begin in the 2024/25 season, would have given teams like Arsenal – which did not qualify for European events based on their league result last year, a chance to compete.

Because of UEFA's club coefficient leaderboards, which evaluate teams based on their accomplishments in UEFA tournaments over the previous five seasons, it might have been a backdoor into the Champions League. With the collapse of the European Super League just a year previously, many questioned the ideas. 

According to a very reliable source, Europe's top clubs and UEFA have met and are close to agreeing on a compromise. According to the source, senior members from UEFA met with the European Club Association's (ECA) board on Monday in Madrid and heard ideas to implement a weakened version of the original plan.

According to the article, it also intends to use UEFA's country coefficient rather than club ranking to assign places in its competitions to its member associations.

The revised approach is thought to be more in line with the incentives won season-by-season narrative because it uses the nation coefficient and reduces the historic timeframe from five to one.

The ECA has given the green light to countries with a maximum of five Champions League slots, therefore it remains to be seen whether Chelsea, Arsenal, and Spurs can all qualify in the same season, according to the Athletic.

The final proposal will be considered at two more sessions on Tuesday before UEFA members gather in Vienna for their annual congress on Wednesday.

UEFA President Aleksander eferin is said to want to declare on Wednesday that a deal for the post-2024 Champions League structure has been reached. The Athletic, on the other hand, believes it will have to wait until the end of May.
