Man United Set-Up A Carabao Cup Final Clash With Newcastle, After Seeing Off Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United have advanced to the Carabao Cup final after cruising past Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

In just six months in charge of the Red Devils, Erik ten Hag has successfully guided the team to their first Wembley final in five years, as they bid to win the trophy they last won in 2017.

United had won the first leg against Nottingham 3-0 at the City Ground last week.

Forest battled hard and put up an impressive performance at Old Trafford but conceded twice in four minutes late the second half as Anthony Martial and Fred extended the aggregate score to 5-0.

Both of United's goals were assisted by Marcus Rashford, who had also started the game on the bench.

Man United will now play Newcastle in the 2022/23 final at Wembley on Sunday February 26.

Eddie Howe's team overcame Southampton 3-1 in their two-legged semi-final.

It will be only Newcastle's second ever EFL Cup final appearance, after they lost 2-1 to Man City in the 1976 final.

Man United last faced the Magpies in a major final in 1999 under Sir Alex Ferguson's historic treble winning team, who them 2-0 in the FA Cup at Wembley.

United are bidding for a sixth triumph in the League Cup, the first of which came in 1992, against Forest, and subsequent successes came in 2006, 2009, 2010 and recently the 2017 victory over Southampton.   

Erik ten Hag, content but relentless, speaks to Sky after the game; 

“When you win and go to the final, it is OK! The first half wasn’t great, to be honest, the tempo was too low, we didn’t create chances and allowed them two good chances … that must not happen, but the second half was better, we scored some good goals.

"Forest played well in the first half, stayed compact, and we didn’t find the gaps … we should have done quicker switches … we just want to improve every day … we have a good squad so we have to demand high standards … if we do not match those standards we are not happy … when you are a United player you have to match the standards … we need all of our players … you can see that tonight as we did something from the bench … [a busy fixture list] is a luxury problem but that is how we want it … a club like United has to play every third day, but we are keen on that … we are looking forward to Wembley to face Newcastle who are a great team.”

After completing the second leg against Nottingham Forest, the Red Devils now prepares to host Crystal Palace on Saturday, hoping to bounce back after recently dropping points at Selhurst Park.
