The Nigeria Professional Football League Has Been Suspended, Due To The Coronavirus Outbreak In The Country.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has been suspended till further notice following the official announcement made on Wednesday by the League management committee (LMC).


The decision, was in line with the global health preventive measures against the Coronavirus outbreak in the country (COVID-19).


An official statement released via the league website says;
“In suspending the remaining league matches, the League Management Company (LMC) said it would review the decision after consulting the nation’s health authorities, namely, the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).”


According to reports, Nigeria have recorded five cases of the virus, with none leading to death.

The league supension will commence immediately, just after the conclusion of matchweek 25 fixtures on Wednesday, which saw eminent clubs like Enyimba getting a 2-0 victory away to Adamawa United, and Rangers International winning 3-2 away to Akwa Starlets.

The victory for Enyimba and Rangers, sees them return to the top 5 in the league standings.

As it stands, 13 games is left to complete the season, with Plateau United currently leading the table with 49 points, 4 points above second place Rivers United with 45 points.

Lobi stars stays third with 43 points, Rangers International and Eyimba in fourth and fifth place with 37 and 36 points respectively.

While the bottom four teams are, Nasarawa United and Jigawa stars in 17th and 18th place, as both teams share same points (29), one point above 19th place Kwara United and Adamawa United remain bottom with 20 points.

At the international level, CloudNine Sports understand that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier suspended all football activities in the country for four week at the earliest, in order to curtail the spread of the virus.

In Africa, CAF has supended all pending fixtures, including the AFCON 2021 qualifiers which was initially scheduled to be played later this month, to a yet to be decided date.
