CAF POSTPONES THE AFCON 2021 TOURNAMENT BY A YEAR FURTHER (2022).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reached a decision following a video-confrence meeting on Tuesday held by the Executive Committee to postponed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by a year further.

The 33rd edition of the AFCON tournament was initially scheduled to be held from 9th January to 6th February 2021 in Cameroon, will now take place from 8th January to 5th February 2022 due to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

Cameroon who missed out on hosting the 2019 tournament to Egypt, will still keep their hosting rights once the tournament returns in 2022.

The decision was disclosed in a statement via the CAF website;

"After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022"
"The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in due course"..

”Also, Total African Nations Championship (CHAN), Cameroon 2020, has been postponed till January 2021 in Cameroon.

“The CAF Executive Committee is satisfied with the Cameroonian authorities for their commitment towards the hosting of the two competitions.

”Cameroon is ready to host either competition and are within schedule."

The remaining four round of AFCON Qualification matches, are still yet to be completed and there is still uncertainty about how the matches will be played considering the travel restriction in some countries in the continent.

Algeria are current champions of the tournament, having defeated Senegal 1-0 at the finals last July in Cairo, as they won the title for the second time in the country's history since 1990.
