German 2020-21 Bundesliga Season To Resume On September 18.

German Football federation (DFL) have on Friday published the 2020-21 Bundesliga calendar, which will kickstart on the weekend of 18th September to 21st September 2020.

The league which was initially scheduled to resume on August 21, will now resume more than a month than the start date of the just concluded 2019/20 season, in order to give space for the conclusion of the Champions League and Europa League in August.

The Bundesliga season would end on 22nd May, 2021 in order to also give enough time for players to prepare for the postponed Euro 2020 which is set to begin on 11th June, 2021.

Bayern Munich were last month crowned champions of the Bundesliga for the eighth consecutive times, following the resumption of the remaining league matches on 16 May, which were all played behind closed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Düsseldorf and Paderborn were relegated, while Bielefeld and Stuttgart are promoted from the lower division (Bundesliga 2).

The German Super Cup is normally the German season-opener, but it’s been delayed to Sept. 30.

There would also be shortened winter break from four weeks last season to just two-weeks, with the last round of league matches in 2020 to be played on the weekend of December 19-20, and the restart on January 2-3.

Bayern Munich who are still in competition for the Champion League, also kept their hopes of a treble alive this season, after defeating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin last Saturday to win the German Cup for the 20th time.

A statement from the DFL reads;
"The two semi-finals of the DFB Cup are scheduled for the first weekend in May, but these two dates are still subject to the last pending coordination talks," said the DFB's statement.

"In the event of a postponement, the 30th matchday of the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga (Tuesday, April 20 to Thursday, April 22) would be affected and would also have to be postponed.

"When planning for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, numerous aspects had to be taken into account, in addition to the dates of the DFB Cup, and above all the other rounds of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League from the current 2019/20 season, which will be held in August, as well as the encounters of both competitions in the coming season."

The fixtures schedule of the new calendar league season will be announced in the coming weeks, as clubs will work with local health authorities to draw up plans for the safe return of fans at the staduim.
