Jordan Henderson Succeeds Raheem Sterling As The Newly Crowned FWA Footballer Of The Year.
Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson has been crowned the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year for the 2019/20 season.
The 30-year-old midfielder became the first Liverpool captain in 30-years to lift the Premier League trophy.
With his impressive performance this season, he saw off competition from his team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane as well as Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford in the top five list to win the honour.
He succeeds Man City's star Raheem Sterling who claimed the prize last year.
Ten other players who received votes from the FWA members are Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Sterling, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Sergio Aguero, Adama Traore, Danny Ings, Jack Grealish, James Maddison, and Jonny Evans.
In a statement, Henderson told Sky Sports:
"I'd like to say how appreciative I am of the support of those who voted for me and the Football Writers' Association in general, it’s an incredible honour.
"There have been great players in the past that have won it and to be part of that list is amazing really.
"It’s very hard to describe but at the same time I would be wrong to sit here and accept this award just for me personally because I look at the team and what they have achieved over the past year and I think you could pick anyone that dressing-room who would deserve it.
"So for me, it is about receiving this on behalf of them because without them, this isn’t possible.’
The England international joined the Reds from Sunderland in June 2011 as a 21-year-old under Kenny Dalglish the then manager of Liverpool.
Following the departure of Gerrard in June 2015, Henderson was handed the club's captain armband.
He has played a vital role for Jurgen Klopp's team success for the past few seasons, which saw him lift the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Fifa Club World Cup and just recently the Premier League trophy all within the space of 13 months.
"The day I woke up after lifting the trophy it was about the next challenge... Said Henderson who vows to retain the Premier League title next season
"I have listened to people who have won in the past and they say it is hard to win the Premier League trophy but even harder to retain it, so the challenge starts now.
"It will be a huge challenge but one myself and the team are ready for.
"We will improve more on our perfomnace and give everything on the football pitch and in training.
"The few weeks break is the same for everyone. That will not be an excuse. We would be ready to start the new Premier League tomorrow and do everything to retain the title."
CloudNine Sports understands that Henderson has scored 29 goals in 364 appearances in the Reds shirt throughout his nine years stay at Anfield.
He registered four goals and five assists in a league campaign in which Liverpool have only tasted defeat just three times and were unbeaten at home this season.
It has been an outstanding year for Henderson for both club and country, as he was also named the England national team's Player of the Year in January 2020.
