Bayern Munich Emerge Champions Of The UEFA Super Cup, Making It A Fourth Trophy In 2020.

Champions League winners Bayern Munich completes the 2019-20 quadruple, following a well fought victory over Europa League Winners Sevilla on Thursday night.

Bayern won the game in extra-time thanks to Javi Martinez’s header, as the result brought an herioc end to Sevilla’s 22 record matches unbeaten run across all competition since February when they last lost 2-1 away to Celta Vigo in the La Liga.

The match which went down at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, saw the German gaints fell behind for the first time this season in the 14 minutes, when the VAR judged David Alaba had fouled Ivan Rakitic in the area and Lucas Ocampos converted the penalty to give Sevilla an early lead

Leon Goretzka got Bayern back on level terms just before the break, after smashing home the equaliser with 34 minutes.

It stayed 1-1 at the break, but Bayern turned up the heat in the second half dominating possession, which saw their two second-half goals disallowed, one for a Lewandowski offside, and the other for a shove by Lewandowski.

Sevilla made a great start to extra-time with Bayern in all sorts of trouble, maintaining the pressure from Julen Lopetegui's side, as Manuel Neuer underlined his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers making great saves to deny Sevilla a number of late opportunities to win the game.

And just five minutes after coming off the bench to replace Goretzka in the 99th minute of extra-time, veteran midfielder Martinez headed home the winner in 104 minutes to seal a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in front of just 15,000 supporters, as UEFA allows a partial return of fans for the first time, adhering to social distancing rules in time for the Champions League and Europa League group stages.

The win extends Bayern’s winning streak to 23 games dating back to February under manager Hansi Flick, as they lifted a fourth trophy in three months having won the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League earlier on.

This would be the second time in seven years that Bayern would be lifting the Super Cup, after winning it in 2013 via penalties against Chelsea in Prague, making them the only German side to have won the trophy.

It's now 38 games, 35 wins, 126 goals under manager Hansi Flick, winning more trophies (4), more than draws and losses put together (3) in just less than 11 months of being in charge.

Sevilla has now played four Super Cup games in the last seven years as a serial winner of the Europa League and lost them all.

Sevilla get their La Liga campaign underway this weekend with a trip to Cadiz.

Meanwhile, Bayern can also win a fifth title this year, when they host Borussia Dortmund next Wednesday in Munich for the German Super Cup.
