Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax on Wednesday, in a deal thought to be in the region of €39m, plus another €5m in add-ons.

The 23-year-old completed his United medical in Nerherlands on Tuesday, and has signed a five-year contract, with an option to extend a year further.

He choose to wear the No.34 shirt for the Red Devils in honour of his close friend Abdelhak Nouri who suffered a tragic cardiac arrhythmia attack in 2017, which ended his footballing career at a young age of 20.

The 34 shirt number was most recently worn by Dean Henderson who willingly gave out the number, as he would be getting a new one as well.

Van de Beek would be Ole Gunnar Solskjear's first signing of the summer, as the united manager looks forward to strengthen his squad ahead of the upcoming 2020/21 season.

Solskjear speaking on the recent addition to his squad said;

“Donny has all of the technical attributes needed to perform in this team and has the personality required to succeed at Manchester United.

“His ability to see space, time his movements and read the game will really complement the qualities that we have in midfield and his arrival really strengthens the depth of talent we have in that position.

“Donny’s performances in the Eredivisie and in Europe have been excellent over the last few years and we are all looking forward to working with him.”

The move to Old Trafford, would see Van de Beek end his five-seasons stay at Ajax, a club where he played as a youth, before joining the senoir team in 2015, making 175 appearances and scoring 41 goals.

He won the Eredivisie, KNVB and the Johan Cruyff shield in the 2018/19 season, and played a key role as Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019, scoring four goals along the way, before painfully loosing to Tottenham Hotspur.

He contributed 10 goals and 11 assists in 37 games last season before the Eredivisie was shortened due to the coranavirus pandemic.

Top European clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal were all linked to signing Van de Beek before the Covid_19 break but failed to reach a deal due to financial difficulties.

Donny van de Beek expressed his delight of joining United:

“I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history"... he said via the club's website.

“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.

“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.

“Everyone has told me how amazing the Old Trafford atmosphere is and I am looking forward to experiencing that, once it is safe for the fans to return.

“This team has some of the best midfielders in the world and I know that I can learn from them and also bring my own strengths to the group.

“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that.”

Van de Beek is currently with the Netherlands national team in preparation for their upcoming Nations League matches against Poland on September 7 and against Italy on September 9.

He has so far made 10 caps for Netherlands since his debut in a friendly game against Romania in 2017.
