Ajax are crowned 2020/21 Dutch Eredivisie champions.

The Amsterdam club claimed a record-extending 35th Eredivisie title at home after trashing lowly Emmen 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Defender Jurrien Timber opened scoring in the 10th minute, striker Sebastien Haller added a second in the 61st minute, four minutes later defender Devyne Rensch scored the third, and Davy Klaassen scored the last goal at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the 74th minute as Ajax overwhelmed its relegation-threatened opponents, which had come into the fixture on the back of three straight wins, but were no match for the champions.

The victory moves Ajax to 79 points from 31 games, 14 points ahead of second-placed PSV Eindhoven, who played a 2-2 draw at home to Heerenveen with only three matches to go.

Ajax retain the title it won two years ago after the championship was called off in the 2019/20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eredivisie gaints was joint top in the league standings with AZ Alkmaar with 56 points each from 25 matches, but Ajax stays first based on goals difference in a 34-game season, while Feyernoord stays third with 50 points.

According to reports, Thousands of fans were gathered outside the empty stadium despite police warning setting off red flares and fireworks and celebrating the title long before the final whistle.

The title win makes it more exciting for Ajax for manager Erik ten Hag, making it his fifth trophy since his appointment in January 2018 (2 league titles, 2 KNVB Cups, 1 Johan Cruyff Shield).

He signed a new contract during the week to keep him at the club until June 2023 which brings to an end all speculations of leaving the club to go join Tottenham.
