Portugal Likely A Potential Venue To Host The Champions League Final

The 2020/21 All-English Champions League final between Chelsea v Man City is set to be played in Portugal rather than Wembley.

Talks of hosting the final at Wembley have been futile after Boris Johnson had earlier in the week urged the use of Wembley to host the clash between both Premier League clubs. But both UEFA and the British government failed to overcome obstacles to the match taking place in London.

According to sources, the UK government's refusal to relax quarantine restrictions for visitors has put hosting the final in London in doubt.

UEFA had hoped reach an agreement that 2,000 VIPs, media and staff attending the game would granted exemption from current regulations, and despite further talks planned for Tuesday, there appears little chance of the UK government changing their stance.

Estádio do Dragão in Porto is now likely an alternative to be the venue for the final.

Portugal is on the UK’s “green list” of countries, so fans of both clubs could travel to go watch the showpiece match.

The final was originally been scheduled for Istanbul, but due to Turkey’s coronavirus situation, the country has been on the UK’s ‘red list’ which makes travel impossible, with travelling spectators required to complete a 10 day quarantine in a hotel on their return.

This would be the second season in a row the Champions League final would be played in Portugal, having played last year's final in Lisbon.

However, up to 6,000 fans from each club should be able to attend the showpiece match especially for Man City who reached the final of Europe’s elite club competition.
