Manchester City's defender Joao Cancelo has revealed that he and his family were robbed by and assaulted by four cowards who stole jewellery from him on Thursday night.

"Unfortunately, today i was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family... The 27-year-old said revealing injuries to his face in an Instagram Story.

"When you show resistance, this is what happens.

"They managed to take all the jewelry and leave me with my face in this state.

"The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all OK."

Cancelo did not mention where the incident took place, but his club Man City later said that the incident happened during a burglary at his home with his 2-year-old daughter, Alicia, with his partner Daniela Machado.

City said in a statement they were giving support to the player and his family and that he is helping the police with their enquiries.

"We are shocked and appalled that João Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted," City said in a statement.

"Joao and his family are being supported by the club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter”.

Cancelo who joined City from Juventus in a £60m deal in August 2019 with Danilo going the other way, has been a key part in the defense for Pep Guardiola's side so far.

He has played in all of City's games in all competition this season, except one league game which was the 7-0 trashing of Leeds United on 14th December, due to a compilation of yellow cards.

Cancelo played the full 90 minutes in Manchester City's 1-0 win at Brentford on Wednesday night going eight points clear off second place Chelsea.

The Portuguese international who currently is recovering from the injuries could miss out of action when City play Arsenal on New Year's Day at the Emirates stadium.

City may extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 12 points if they get all maximum points against the Gunners.
