OFFICIAL: Jose Peseiro Appointed Super Eagles New Head Coach By The NFF.

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation have on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

The 61-year-old Portuguese manager was highly recommended by fellow country-man Jose Mourinho after the desperate NFF boss Amaju Pinnick contacted the AS Roma boss in search of a new gaffer.

He replaces the former Franco-German boss Gernot Rohr who was sacked on December 12 CloudNine Sports reported.

Mr Peseiro is expected to be at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as team observer, but will officially take full charge of the team after the Nations' Cup in preparations for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

His first assignment would be the Africa World Cup qualifiers final Play-off games in March next year.

The ex-Porto, Sporting CP, and Ah Ahly boss last coaching stint was the Venezuela national team where he took the team to the 2021 Copa América, but got eliminated in the group stage with two draws and two defeats.  He reportedly left the job in August, due to unpaid salaries amidst the country's economic crisis due to Covid_19.

“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles,” reads a statement by the NFF.

“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.”

Interim boss Augustine Eguavoen will be in charge at the biennial tournament when the three-time African Champions begin their campaign in Cameroon on Tuesday, January 11 against seven-time champions Egypt.

Nigeria is grouped alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D.

The tournament begins on Sunday January 9, 2022, with the opening fixture between host nation Cameroon vs Burkina Faso.
