"Erling Haaland Almost Signed For Man United In 2020" — Says Borussia CEO Joachim Watzke.

Erling Braut Haaland came close to joining Manchester United from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, according to Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stint in charge, the Red Devils were heavily associated with Haaland, and the 20-time English champions were thought to be in pole position to sign him at one point.

United pulled out of the deal as they refused to agree to the same buyout clause as well as a percentage of future sales, as the club ended up taking Odion Ighalo on loan from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua at the tail end of the January transfer window.

Dortmund eventually signed the Norwegian international in December 2019 three days before the winter transfer window for €20 million, and Watzke has stated that the German club's choice to include a release clause in the contract allowed them to bring him to Dortmund.

"We offered Erling Haaland a release clause... otherwise he would have gone to Manchester United," the Bundesliga club's general manager told 19:09 Talk.

Haaland is set to leave Dortmund this summer for £67 million, with Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona all interested for his signature 

Sources claims that Haaland have reportedly refused to entertain offers from Man United, despite the Red Devils willingness to match any financial package from other suitors, as he is sizing up his next move, with his £63million release clause set to become active at the end of the season.

The 21-year-old doesn't trust the sporting project of the Old Trafford club.

His agent Mino Raiola had informed Man United that Haaland feels as though the club can't match his ambitions, in spite of the fact that they have hired a new permanent coach.

Having suffered injury issues, the 21-year-old has managed to score 28 goals and added eight assists in 27 games for BVB this season.

He also scored a sensational hattrick in their last game but it wasn't enough as VfL Bochum cane from behind to win the game 4-3 at the Signal Iduna Park.

With three games to go in the Bundesliga, they will look to bounce back from that disappointing defeat and solidify their position in second place when they visit Fürth on Saturday.

Haaland has gone on to score a total of 85 goals and contributed 23 assists in 87 appearances for his German club, following his 29 goals and seven assists in 27 appearances for Salzburg.
