UEFA Names Polish Referee For Real Madrid Vs Chelsea Second-leg Quarter Final UCL Clash.
The Union Of European Football Association (UEFA), have appointed Polish referee Szymon Marciniak to take charge of the Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash between Real Madrid and Chelsea at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, 12th April 2022.
The 41-year-old referee is considered one of the most highly-rated Polish referees in the world since becoming a FIFA listed referee in 2011.
Both Real and Chelsea team would have to be at their best on Tuesday night despite how intense the game might be.
This will be his fifth time in the competition he would be in charge of Real Madrid's game, The first was against Roma at the Santiago Bernabéu, in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 in 2015/16, while the last time came in the Group Stage this season, a 3-0 away win against Sheriff Tiraspol.
He was was also the referee when Real lost 4-2 to Atletico Madrid in the 2018/19 UEFA Super Cup final. Eight players received yellow cards in that game.
Marciniak has never refereed a Chelsea game before, but he served as an assistant Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the 2019 Europa League final when the Blues cruised to a 4-1 victory over Arsenal to emerge champions.
According to reports, Marciniak has issued cards on each of his last eight appointments, at an average of 4.25 per match,which includes two red cards in his last four matches.
He recently sent off Marseille midfielder Gerson against PAOK in the Europa Conference League last week. The last time he took charge of a game without booking anyone was on February 16 when he oversaw Liverpool's 2-0 win at Inter Milan.

Real will go into the game at the Bernabeu with a 3-1 lead from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea who are the visiting team need a lot of physicality to overcome the deficit, while Real Madrid will have to match that.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have been in a strong position in the league for much of the campaign, and could eventually win back the title as early as their next match against Sevilla.
