Barcelona Annnouces The Signing Of Robert Lewandowski From Bayern Munich.

FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Robert Lewandowski, dependent on the player passing a medical and contracts being signed.

Robert Lewandowski is expected to fly to the US on Sunday to join up with Barcelona’s pre-season tour, and likely to have his medical in Miami.

The deal, brings an end to the biggest transfer saga of the summer window.

Since the departure of Luis Suarez, Barcelona has needed a world class No.9, with manager Xavi explaining the need of a top striker to club's president Joan Laporta.

There was a lot of talk about signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, but the economic situation of the club made the move impossible, as the Norwegian was not going to wait that long for Barca with Manchester City and Real Madrid pushing really hard for his signature.

The Spanish giants then turned their eye to Robert Lewandowski who had just one year left on his contract with Bayern and the player wasn't overly keen on renewing.

Lewandowski had already informed the Bundesliga side that he wants to leave the club and face a new challenge.

The Golden Boot winner of the last two seasons will sign a three-year deal with the option to extend it for a further year, which will keep him at the Camp Nou until the end of the 2025-26 season.

The transfer fee is said to amount to €45 million in fixed payment, plus €5 million in variables.

Born on 21 August in the Polish capital of Warsaw. Lewandowski started his career at Legia Warsaw, his professional career began in the youth teams at 2006 at Znicz Pruszków where he was top scorer on two separate occasions.

A move followed to Polish first division side Lech Poznan where he was top scorer in the league in 2009/10.

He further joined Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2010, where he won the German league title twice and collected a runners-up medal when Jurgen Klopp’s side lost in the final of the Champions League against Bayern.

Lewandowki’s next move was to none other than Bayern where he become a vital part of the all-conquering squad. In 2020 with the Bavarians the Polish striker won all there is to win; the Bundesliga title, the German cup and Super Cup and the Champions League in which he was top scorer with 15 goals.

The striker’s consistent goalscoring led him to be named as ‘The Best’ on two occasions, picking up the award in 2020 and 2021.

And while the move to Barcelona has gone through, it comes with a fair bit of problems, the first one being Lewandowski’s wages. Barca will also have to find a way to register him alongside the already signed Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha.

Secondly, Barcelona have no spare jersey number in the first-team squad for the striker. His preferred No.9 is with Memphis Depay, who, while linked with an exit, is still in the team, but there remains an expectation that he could be sold before the end of the transfer window.

Ansu Fati dons the No.10 shirt, and Ousmane Dembele who just renewed his contract has the No.7 shirt.

Chelsea full-back duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are both on Xavi's summer wish list, while Man City's midfielder Bernardo Silva is also a target, though they may be priced out of a move for the Portugal international.
