Portugal Maintains Top Spot After Defeating Czech Republic In Stylish Fashion

The Portuguese remain unbeaten thanks to a two-goal victory.

Joao Cancelo and Gonçalo Guedes scored for Portugal in a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic on Thursday night in Lisbon.

The Portuguese came into the match atop Group 2 of the UEFA Nations League A for 2022-23, while the Czechs strated the game level on points with their opponents, they drop to third after Spain defeated Switzerland 1-0 in Geneva

Portugal was dominant on the ball throughout, barely missing a pass and outshooting their opponents (5-1 on target). Following a 4-0 thrashing of Switzerland over the weekend, the Portuguese looked eager to recreate that performance on Thursday.

They would only earn two goals in the first half, which came in quick succession shortly after the half-hour mark.

Cancelo put his side ahead with a well-struck strike from a tight angle in the 33rd minute, before Guedes scored five minutes later to put the game out of reach.

Bernado Silva staged a man-of-the-match performance as he bagged a brace of assists to inspire his side to victory.

Despite having a number of chances throughout the encounter, Portugal would have to settle for a two-goal comfortable win.

Victory for the Portuguese means that they sit two points clear of Spain, having win two and draw one if their opening three games.

Portugal have the chance to extend their advantage when travel to play Switzerland on Sunday, while Czech play Spain away.
