"We Will Put Our Hearts On The Line Against The Super Eagles" – Sierra Leone defender, Osman Kakay
Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay says that the Leone Stars is fully ready to take on the Super Eagles on Thursday for the Group A opener of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The West African nation, will begin their quest for a place in Cote d’Ivoire 2023 with an away fixture against the Super Eagles at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
John Keister’s men are keen to make a return to the biennial competition and have Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Sao Tome and Principe to contend with in Group A.
They are currently in Abuja following their arrival since Sunday, and had their first training session with a players present that same day.
Ahead of the clash on Thursday, Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay updated fans on Leone Stars camp in Nigeria before having their final training session yesterday- Match Situation Training- at the M. K. O. Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.
Both teams last met each other in a double header 2021 AFCON qualifiers game in November 2020, playing out a 4-4 draw in Nigeria, and a 0-0 draw in Sierra Leone.
The Leone Stars made it to their first AFCON finals appearance in Cameroon since the 1996 edition in South Africa.
Kakay who currently plays for EFL Championship side Queens Park Rangers, hinted that the players are in good spirit and are looking forward to facing the Super Eagles.
"The boys are in good spirit, we are preparing for the games against Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.
"There’s been talks going round misrepresenting what I’ve said but I’m a professional footballer I respect every opponent I play against,” the 24-year-old stated in a short video posted on the official Twitter handle of the Sierra Leone Football Association.
“Hopefully me and the team can go out there and put our hearts on the line for Sierra Leone and give the fans back home what they want.”
