Pep Guardiola’s men looked much better after the break, particularly when new signing Julián Álvarez was introduced alongside Phil Foden, while Jurgen Klopp brought on Darwin Nunez for Firmino in the 59th minute.

Álvarez made the breakthrough when he slotted home after a goalmouth scramble in the 70th minute, following a lengthy VAR check the goal was being eventually given to level the scoreline.

Ruben Dias accidentally blocked a Darwin Nuñez header with his hand, and Mohamed Salah scored the resulting penalty in the 83rd minute to put the Reds back in front , before Darwin Nunez who came off the bench, then put the icing on the cake with an injury time header (90+4 mins) to make it the perfect afternoon for both he and Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who has now won every single trophy available at the club said after the win: “Two teams who were far away from their best, but what both teams made of what was had was absolutely incredible.

“I liked the game a lot, most of the time City games against us are good to watch. We don’t win them always, but they are always entertaining.

“I was happy with the starting line-up and how we started the game, but then I have to say that all subs made a real difference.

“They were really in the game, and I loved that.

“The thing I learned today was that the boys are ready, that was good.”
