Rangers And Super Eagles Star Calvin Bassey Identified As Ideal Replacement For Man United Target Lisandro Martinez Martinez.

AJAX are reportedly interested in signing Rangers star Calvin Bassey this summer amid interest from various Premier League clubs.

The Eredivisie side are on the verge of selling their star defender Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United who has agreed on a £46m transfer fee.

The transfer would see Martinez reunite with his former manager at Old Trafford, as part of the rebuild.

Following the recent development, Ajax need to replace the left-sided centre-back ahead of the new season, and are keen to spend some of the money on Nigeria Super Eagles star Bassey.

According to talkSPORT's the Dutch champions are looking to sign Bassey as an ideal replacement for Martinez.

Rangers are hopeful of holding on to player for another season, as they have recently sold Bassey's fellow country man Joe Aribo to Southampton last week in a deal potentially worth up to £10million.

The Ibrox Club have put a £25m price tag on the defender, who is equally comfortable and effective at both left-back and centre-back, two of the positions Martinez has been deployed in for Ajax.

It remains to be seen if Ajax are willing to accept that figure, as they would prefer to pay a fee of between £15-20million.

Brighton and Aston Villa are other Premier League teams also very interested in Bassey.

The 22-year-old joined Rangers from Leicester City in 2020 for just £230,000 and had improved greatly in his game helping Rangers to win the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title under former boss Steven Gerrard.

He became a subject of intense speculation over his future at Rangers after his standout performances this concluded season, that saw him put up a man-of-the-match display in the Europa League final against eventual champions Frankfurt and  also won Rangers the Scottish Cup for the 34th-time after a 2-0 victory against Heart of Midlothian in the 2022 final.
