"I'm So Happy To Continue My Stay With The Blues"... Thiago Silva On Extending His Contract With Chelsea.

Thiago Silva has agreed to a new one-year contract extension at Chelsea through the summer of 2024, the London club announced on Friday.

The 38-year-old defender will now be with Chelsea for a fourth year running after initially joining for the club on a one-year contract following his departure as a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2020.

He helped the club to Champions League success in his first full season, and subsequently signed 12-month extensions in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Silva, who turns 39 in September, has made 106 appearances in all competitions for the Blues since his arrival from Paris, also winning the UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, and reaching two FA Cup finals and an EFL Cup final.

The former Fluminense and AC Milan player, has played in 18 of Chelsea’s 21 Premier League games so far this season, missing only three games and captaining the team on four occasions.

“I am honestly so happy to continue my career with the Blues,” Silva told Chelsea’s official website after extending his deal.

“When I signed my first contract here, it was to just do one year. Now it is already the fourth!

“I could not have imagined that, but really it is a very special moment for me to sign and stay at Chelsea.”

Although Chelsea have pursued a policy of signing younger players to long-term contracts, Silva's leadership and experience is viewed as a vital component of the squad's development under manager Graham Potter, as they pass through this tough transition period.

"We're delighted that Thiago has decided to continue with Chelsea," chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said.

"He's a world-class talent, as he's proven over many years for club and country, and his experience, quality and leadership skills are vital to our vision going forward.

"We're thrilled he has extended his contract with us and we look forward to more success with him ahead!"

Silva, who has made 113 international appearances, captained Brazil to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where they lost to Croatia via penalties.

The veteran defender, has recently been a mainstay at the heart of Chelsea's defence most especially after the departure of Antonio Rüdiger from Stamford Bridge to Real Madrid as a free agent in June 2022.

Despite being years past what is supposed to be his physical peak, Silva has been one of the team’s better player in Chelsea recent poor run of form.

The West London club have crashed out of both domestic cups following defeats to Man City, and are currently ninth in the Premier League.

Chelsea returns to action in the Premier League when they visit West Ham in the lunch time kick off on Saturday, and then travel to Germany to play Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League round-of-16 first-leg on Wednesday, February 15.
