Newcastle Beat Southampton To Reach Their First Cup Final In 24 Years.

Newcastle United defeats Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday night to secure their spot in the League Cup final thanks to two first-half goals from Sean Longstaff.

Newcastle came into the tie having won 1-0 on a Joelinton's goal in the first leg last week.

Anthony Gordon was paraded on the pitch before kick-off after completing his £45 million move to Newcastle from boyhood club Everton.

Longstaff scored a quickfire double in the 5th and 21th minute of the encounter at St. James'Park.

The midfielder gave the hosts the perfect start with a fine strike in the fifth minute and doubled their advantage in 21st minute.

Che Adams' fantastic strike from outside the area pulled one back for the visitors in the 29th minute, to end Nick Pope's run of 10 successive clean sheets.

Newcastle held firm despite Bruno Guimaraes' sending off in the 81st minute after the VAR reviewed a horror tackle on Samuel Edozie, as Eddie Howe's side booked their place in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

A 3-1 victory on aggregate means the Magpies booked a final date to face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest at the London Wembley Stadium on February 26.

The Red Devils hold a 3-0 lead against Forest heading into Wednesday's second leg at Old Trafford.

Newcastle, who have never won the League Cup, are aiming to lift a major domestic trophy for the first time since the 1955 FA Cup. Their last major silverware in any competition came in the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

It's Newcastle first ever domestic cup final in 24-years, when they were beaten by the famed, treble-winning Man United side in the 1998-99 FA Cup final.

Since the Saudi-backed ownership group took over the club once regarded as the laughing stock of the Premier League, they have been revitalized under manager Eddie Howe.

They currently sit third in the Premier League and look set to clinch a spot on the top four for Champions League football next season.
