Tragic: Christian Atsu Found Dead At 31, After Going Missing In Turkey Earthquake.

Christian Atsu’s agent and Turkish media have apparently confirmed that Atsu has been found dead at age 31, following the deadly earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6th, 2023.



Among tens of thousands of others, Atsu one of the victims, after his body was found among the rubble left by the earthquake that has already reportedly left more than 40,000 dead across Turkey and Syria.


Despite initial news he had been found alive and in the hospital, the news were later denied by those responsible at his club, as Atsu remained missing. After a long search the tragic news of his passing was announced earlier today, after being found under the rubble of the building where he lived in Antakya, Hatay, his agent has said.

Turkish football agent Murat Uzunmehmet, who handles the player’s rights in Turkey, announced the tragic news on Twitter.


Murat took to Twitter at 5am on Saturday, February 18th 2023 to announce Atsu’s sad passing.Writing in Turkish, he wrote:

“Christian Atsu found and sadly passed away,”

The Ghanaian midfielder Atsu was part of the Newcastle United team which won promotion back to the Premier League in 2017 after joining on loan for the season from Chelsea, and later completed a permanent move.


He was plying his trade with Hatayspor a nice joining the Turkish outfit in September 2022 after a season with Saudi Arabian team Al-Raed.

He had scored one goal in three games, scoring the winning goal in a Super Lig match a day just before the devastating earthquake.



"There are no words to describe our sadness," tweeted his Turkish top-flight club Hatayspor.

"We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person."


He played 258 matches in his career and scored 24 goals with 30 assists. 


For the Ghana national team. Atsu played 65 games and scored 9 goals. With the national team he was in the 2013 and 2015 African Cup of Nations. 

He helped the team to the final of 2015 AFCON where they lost 8-9 in a penalty shootout against the Ivory Coast after a goalless encounter at the Estadio de Bata in Equatorial Guinea.

At the end of the tournament, Atsu was awarded with both the Player of the Tournament award, as well as the Goal of the Tournament award for his strike against Guinea.


He also participated in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, starting in all the matches as the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage.
