'We lost because of the referee'... Emre Can and Jude Bellingham Laments After Dortmund's Defeat To Chelsea In The UCL.

Chelsea’s season took a turn for the better as they sealed a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the second leg round-of-16 Champions League game.

The Blues qualifies to the quarter-finals thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Hevertz.

Dortmund arrived in England on the back of a 10-game winning run in all competitions, including having a goal advantage following a 1-0 win in the first-leg courtesy ofKarim Adeyemi's goal. 

The visitors posed barely any attacking threat in the first half at Stamford Bridge, as Marco Reus free-kick that keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga did brilliantly to palm to safety.

Sterling finally opened the scoring late in the first half to haul the hosts level in the tie after he smashed Ben Chilwell’s cross into the net.

Marius Wolf was deemed to have handled the ball, as Havertz scored the winner in the second half from the penalty spot after seeing his initial effort hit the post. He was given the chance to take it again after a Dortmund player encroached into the area.

The scenes at the end at Stamford Bridge showed just how important this game was for Chelsea, with the German side exiting the last-16 stage.

Emre Can further criticised the referee decision in the aftermath of his side's loss: "We didn't deserve to lose, but we lost because of the referee. Giving the penalty back to be taken like that, how is that possible? I don't understand it. The referee was very bad today. The way he talked to us was arrogant."

On his return to England, Jude Bellingham was far from his best and missed a big chance to level the tie when he side-footed wide just before the hour mark.

The Dortmund midfielder who is expected to have his choice of Europe’s top clubs this summer, also spoke about Chelsea's penalty: "From where I was it looked very close. I'm not sure what more he can do with his hands.

"I don't want to get in trouble, I've paid enough (fines).

"It was disappointing. The fact they had a retake was a joke. When you have such a slow run up you're always going to have players encroaching into the box by a yard or so."

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic also had his own share of though about the referee: “I don’t want to talk about the referee. I think it was a tight call (the penalty) and a harsh decision but that’s how it goes.”

Chelsea have now progressed from five UEFA Champions League knockout stage ties after losing the first leg, the joint-most of any team in the competition’s history (Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid also five).

Borussia Dortmund have now lost their last six away games against English sides in the UEFA Champions League, since beating Arsenal 2-1 in October 2013.
