Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard Set For Shock Managerial Job In Saudi Arabia

Steven Gerrard is believed to be considering an offer to become coach of Saudi club Al Ettifaq.

The former Liverpool captain was sacked as manager of Premier League side Aston Villa last October following poor run of results.

Before then, Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premier League title in the 2020-2021 season, going through the season without any defeats.

According to Reuters; “Al-Ettifaq made an offer to Gerrard. He welcomed the idea but asked for time to study the offer.”

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh of 16 in the Saudi Pro League last season. The league ranks 58th in the world (ten worse than Scotland and ten better than Italy’s Serie C) and are embarked on a major spending spree as the government-backed league seeks to build on  bolstering the profile of the league.

Indeed the Saudi Pro League has been growing in relevance and gaining exposure, since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to Al Nassr in January.

Al Nassr came up short last season, finishing runners up to Al Ittihad in a closely-disputed title race.

Just last week, Real Madrid captain, Karim Benzema, joined Al Ittihad for a reported €200M a year salary. N’Golo Kanté, whose injury issues limited the 32-year-old to nine total appearances for Chelsea last season, has also agreed a deal worth €100M a year to join his compatriot Benzema.

Lionel Messi was offered at least €500M a season to join Al Hilal, before surprising everyone by choosing to MLS and Inter Miami's rather than taking the payday or putting a bow on his legacy by returning to Barcelona.

And Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has now emerged as the club’s alternative to Messi, with the club willing to buy him for £38million.
