OFFICIAL: PSG Announces The Appointment Of Luis Enrique As New Manager.

Paris Saint-Germain have officially announced the appointment of Luis Enrique as the new first team's head coach.

The Spanish manager signed a two-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2025.

This comes after PSG parted company with former manager Christophe Galtier. It had been initially reported on June 6 that PSG sporting director Luis Campos had informed Galtier he would be fired, and the two parties have spent recent weeks in talks over the termination of the manager's contract.

The 56-year-old, only spent one season in the dugout at Parc des Princes and still had one year left on his deal. 

He did manage to deliver the Ligue 1 title last season but came under criticism after another early Champions League exit. 

They were knocked out by Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the round of 16, their second straight exit from that stage of the competition.

The move to relieve Galtier off his duties, comes at a difficult time for him, as he is set to stand trial in France and could face a potential three-year jail sentence, and a fine of €45,000 ($49,000) if found guilty amid allegations of racial discrimination at former club Nice.

He has been summoned to criminal court on Dec. 15 as part of an investigation having denied accusations that he made racist and anti-Muslim comments while he was in charge of Nice from 2021 to 2022 when the scandal broke earlier this year.

Galtier succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as PSG head coach last summer and led the club to the 2022-23 Ligue 1 title but failed to deliver the European success the club wanted.

Former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann had opened talks with PSG to replace Galtier, but those negotiations broke down soon after.

PSG  finally reached a full contract agreement with Luis Enrique earlier this week and he started working on the squad, recruitments and preparation. However, the French club was waiting until a contractual termination agreement was reached with Galtier first before making the announcement public.

Enrique had previously managed Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, and famously winning the treble (Champions League, LaLiga, Copa del Rey) in his first season in charge of the Catalan giants. 

He also went on to win LaLiga once more and the Copa del Rey on two more occasions.

The 53-year-old former Spain's coach has been out of a job since leaving La Roja after their disappointing elimination from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

PSG will be hoping that Luis Enrique can bring more success to the club, particularly in the Champions League. The French side are still yet to lift Europe's most famous trophy despite huge investment in recent years.
