BREAKING: Victor Boniface Is OUT Of The Super Eagles Squad For AFCON 2023.

Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a groin injury.

The in-form Bayer Leverkusen forward is expected to return to Germany, where he will begin treatment for the injury which is expected to keep him out of action for six weeks.

Boniface has enjoyed a blistering start to life for Leverkusen, with 16 goals and 8 assists in 23 games for the German side which saw him won the Bundesliga rookie of the month award three straight times. 

He was set to partner the current African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles squad going forward for the AFCON set to begin this weekend in Abidjan.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury during one of the team’s training sessions in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

A decision is expected to be made on his replacement soon.

OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi is favoured to replace him in the 25-man squad.

Meanwhile, The Super Eagles shockinglyost 2-0 to Guinea Syli Stars in a final 2023 AFCON warm-up game played behind closed doors today at the Bani Yas Stadium in Dubai.

Greece-based midfielder Aguibou Camara scored the opener for Guinea in the 14th minute, before young Bastia striker Facinet Conte doubled the lead in the 64th minute.

A big moment for the Super Eagles in the game was when Sadiq Umar was brought down inside the box on his way to goal, but Moses Simon failed to draw Nigeria level in the 20th minute, as the Guinea goalkeeper saved his penalty kick.

The Super Eagles fired 12 goals past Al Gharib of Dubai 12-0 in a training match Sunday afternoon only for them to come crashing down the following day.

Coach Jose Peseiro gave goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf their Super Eagles debut, while Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was rested as a strikers’ crisis has now hit the team.

Nigeria begin their battle for a fourth African crown when when they play Equatorial Guinea in their first game of the AFCON tournament on January 14.
