Asisat Oshoala BIDS Farewell To Barcelona Fémini Side As She Is Set To Join "US" Club Side Bay FC.

Asisat Oshoala bids farewell to Barcelona Fémini after five successful years with the Spanish club side.

Oshoala, who was named African Women's Footballer of the Year for a sixth time in December, and two-time Ballon d’Or nominee, left Chinese side Dalian Quanjian in 2019, and joined Barcelona, scoring 117 goals in 162 appearances for the club.

The Nigeria Super Falcons striker, is the fourth-highest scorer in Barcelona’s history, behind only Alexia Putellas, Jenni Hermoso and Sonia Bermudez. 

Oshoala was one of a number of players whose Barcelona deal expires at the end of the 2023-24 season, with Alexia Putellas, Mariona Caldentey, Lucy Bronze and Sandra Panos all out of contract in the summer.

During her five years at the Catalan club, she won 13 major trophies; two Champions Leagues, four Liga F titles, three Copa de la Reinas and four Spanish Super Cups.

She was the first African woman to win a Champions League (UWCL) title in 2021 - having already become the first African woman to score in a final in 2019.

Oshoala whose Barca's contract had been set to expire in June, have now signed for American club Bay FC who paid an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old, signed a two-year contract until 2026, with the option of another year with the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team earlier today.

 “To have the opportunity to add a player of Asisat’s quality, experience and winning pedigree to our roster is an exciting and important day for the club and the NWSL,” said Bay FC general manager Lucy Rushton.

 “She brings a top-class mentality to the field combined with pace and technical ability that allows her to lead the line, while also giving those players around her the license to be creative and thrive in space. 

“Asisat is a proven goal scorer at the most elite levels of world football, and she comes here to continue that with Bay FC.”

Earlier this week Bay FC signed Ghana international Princess Marfo from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland.

The 20-year-old forward has signed a deal until the end of the 2025 season, with the option of a third year.

Oshoala who previously had spells with English sides Liverpool and Arsenal, has listed three things she would carry with her as she leaves Barca for NWSL, outfit, Bay FC.

She said this in a lengthy farewell letter to Barcelona’s women football team and fans on Thursday, that she will carry with her the memories, lessons and friendships that she has gained during her time at the club.

“I will carry with me the memories, lessons and friendships that I have gained during my time here,” Oshoala’s letter partly read.

“You have become my family and I will be forever grateful for the love and support you have shown me.”
