Latest FIFA Rankings: Nigeria Moved From 42nd To 28th Best Team In The World Despite AFCON 2023 Final Defeat To Host Ivory Coast .
The latest FIFA Men's World Ranking has been released on Thursday, 15th February, 2024, and the Super Eagles of Nigeria who finished as runners-up at the just concluded African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2023, are one of the biggest climbers in the ranking.
Despite the Super Eagles losing 2-1 to host nation Cote d’Ivoire in the final on Sunday, February 11, Nigeria has gone up 14 places in the latest ranking.
They moved from 42nd to 28th best team in the world, which is the country's highest placement since May 2013, when the Eagles were ranked also 28th.
The Eagles also moved from the sixth position at the beginning of AFCON to third right now in Africa.
Points are awarded according to the outcomes of all FIFA-recognised full international matches in a points system by the global football body.
Other African countries to experience a huge boost in their rankings globally, are eventual AFCON 2023 winners Ivory Coast who moved ten places from 49th in the world to 39th place.
Angola whom the Super Eagles defeated in the quarter finals, are the biggest climbers by ranks globally, rising up 24 places and are 93rd in the world.
Other impressive performers from Africa are Equatorial Guinea moving up nine places to 79th, South Africa who clinched the bronze medal at the concluded AFCON are boosted up eight slots to 58th, Cape Verde, moving up eight places to 65th, Namibia moving up eight places also to 107th, and finally Mali climbing up four places to 47th in the world respectively.
Only Morocco, who are the highest ranked country on the continent, and Senegal (second position) are ahead of Nigeria, despite their disappointing outing at the AFCON tournament.
Egypt and Ivory Coast completes the top five teams in Africa.
Meanwhile, Argentina remained number one in the world while France and Brazil maintained second and third spots, respectively. England and Belgium took the fourth and fifth positions in the ranking.
The next FIFA world ranking will be released on April 4, 2024.
