BREAKING: The 2019/20 Eredivisie Season Have Officilly Been Declared Null And Void, Ajax Denied Champions.

The 2019/20 Eredivisie season has been officially declared null and void, following the announcement by the Netherlands Prime Minister ''Mark Rutte' to extend the lockdown order until September 1st, due to the ongoing global health crisis caused by coronavirus .

Despite the league's announcement that current standings will be recognised as final the KNVB reached a decision on Friday following a club vote to terminate the remaining nine fixtures, as it has become impossible to play out the 2019-20 season.

According to health authorities in the Netherlands, the number of confirmed cases rose by 887 within the past 24 hours, with 123 new deaths making the country's death toll reach 4,177.

"Aware of the different visions and interests for the clubs, the KNVB is aware that whatever decision had to be made, every option would hurt somewhere," a statement from KNVB reads.

"It will be crystal clear to everyone involved, from supporters and players to directors and referees, that public health always comes first.

"Nevertheless, the professional football board is aware that today's decisions will cause great disappointment in football for some."

Table toppers Ajax would therefore be denied the Eredivisie title, which means there will not be a champion this season for the first time since when the competition was introduced in 1956/1957 season (63-years).

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are joint top in the league standings with 56 points each from 25 matches, but Ajax stays first based on goals difference, while Feyernoord stays third with 50 points.

Ajax will go to the last round of the Champions League qualifying stages, while AZ Alkmaar will enter into the second qualification round.

Feyenoord, PSV and Willem II will head to the Europa League group stage/qualifying rounds as they sat in third, fourth and fifth place. However these permutations are subject to ratification from UEFA.

The decision to award Willem II with a Europa League spot is quite a controversial one as the fifth-placed club played one more match than sixth-placed FC Utrecht, who sat three points behind with a far superior goal difference.

ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk who rock the bottom of the league standings, will remain in the Eredivisie next season, as there will not be any promotion or relegation because many rounds of matches are still left to be played in the competition, which can no longer continue.

Cambuur and De Graafschap hopes of playing in the Eredivisie next season have also been jeopardized, as they will remain in the second division (Eerste Divisie), despite being first and second in the league standings.
