Robin Van Persie Reveals That He Was Forced To Leave Manchester United After A Ruthless Conversation With Former Manager Loius Van Gaal.
Former Manchester United forward, Robin van Persie reveals the reasons on leaving the club five years ago, during the tenure of Manager Loius Van Gaal.
The former Netherlands international, has had a very good relationship and thrived well under his fellow conutryman Loius Van Gaal who is the then manager of the Netherlands national team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Louis van Gaal was appointed, as manager of Man United immediately after his time with the 2014 World Cup, as he succeeded former manager David Moyes.
Robin Van Persie have revealed that his relationship with Van Gaal went sour after he had a ruthless" conversation he held with former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal prior to his Old Trafford exit.
Van Persie joined the Red Devils from London side Arsenal just towards the last season of Sir Alex Ferguson era as manager, for a reported fee of £22.5 million ($28m), signing a four-year contract with United.
He scored 26 goals and 15 assists in his first season at Old Trafford, helping Man United to a glorious 20th Premier League title in history.
Unfortunately, his spell in Manchester took a turn for the worst when Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, as his fortunes didn’t improve much afterwards, with a frustratimg string of injuries which limited his contributions to the team.
The 36-year-old, speaking to the High-Performance Podcast of his acrimonious departure says;
“I had this chat with Louis van Gaal and he told me: ‘OK Robin, our ways will part. I’m the coach, you are the player – you have to go, your time is up’,”
“I was like: ‘Yeah however I nonetheless have a contract?’ He said: ‘I don’t care’.
“Ruthless. Towards the end of it, I noticed something coming however not this ruthless. And the way he said it as well. And then a lot of things go through your mind when you get a message like that.
“I still had a contract, my family was happy, it was my eleventh year in England. We love living in England. What’s next?
“My children are going to school, they have their buddies and everything. So in a split second, all these things come across [your mind]. How do you react to that?
“I said: ‘We will see what happens. That’s your opinion. But I have a contract and I’m comfortable in England at Manchester United. So we will see what happens’. And I stood up, shook his hand and left it.”
“On the way home back I was thinking: ‘Okay, this is tough. How do you react to a message like that?’,” he added.
“That ruthless, that hard, that direct. And then loads of matters came through my mind and we started out pre-season. I wasn’t allowed to play in the eleven vs eleven and I was given a ball and told to do my own stuff.
“So you try to remain calm, continue to be cool however there are loads of things happening. You’re playing the macho card. ‘It doesn’t affect me’ but it does. It does affect me, my family and my career. Big time.
"But I tried to stay cool, but maybe at that point it was good for me to talk to someone outside of my inner circle but I was too stubborn to do that.
"Now if I look back at it, there was a couple of points in my career where I should have done that."
Van Persie was then deemed surplus to necessities by Manager Loius Van Gaal a year before his final contract with United was due to expire, as he left the club after the 2014/15 season, as he sealed a move to the Turkish Super Lig to join Fenerbahce for a cut-price fee of £4million.
He scored a total of 53 goals in 105 appearances for Manchester United, winning a Community Shields and one Premier League trophy.
