PSG Crowned Champions Of The French Ligue 1 For The Third Consecutive Time.
French football club Paris Saint-Germain has been crowned champions of the Ligue1 for the third-time in a row, following the official cancellation of the 2019/20 season due to the global health crisis caused by coronavirus.
The country's Prime Minister had earlier made an announcement of extending the lockdown rule until August, which led to the decision of the Ligue 1 Conforama annoucing via social media on Thursday to name the winning club, as it is now obvious that the league season which was initially suspended until further notice on March 13th will no longer resume.
“#CHAMPI9NSATHOME,” PSG posted a video on thier official Twitter handle to celebrate their 9th league titles, and listed the club’s league victories.
The club dedicated the season’s victory to all medical staff for their efforts in the battle against the COVID-19.
A statement from the club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi reads;
“We would like to dedicate this 2019-2020 Ligue 1 title to healthcare staff and to all the everyday heroes on the front line whose commitment and self-sacrifice over many weeks have earned our deepest admiration,”
Paris Saint-German emerged champions with a 12 points lead at the top the league standings having 68 points after 27 matches, ahead of second place Olympique Marsielle who had 56 points, and Rennes in third place with 50 points.
While the bottom three of the league standings sees Nimes with 27 points, Amiens with 23 points, and Toulouse with 13 points.
The decision of promotion and relegation to the Ligue 2 is yet to be decided by the league body.
21-year-old PSG forward Kylian Mbappe finished as top-scorer with 18 goals and 5 assist ahead of Monaco's Wissan Ben Yadder who also had 18 goals but 4 assist, and Lyon's Moussa Dembele who was third on the chart with 16 goals and 2 assists.
