Ciro Immobile Overtakes Robert Lewandowski In The Race For The European Golden Boot.

Ciro Immobile is now the frontrunner in the race for the European Golden boot this season, and can officially win the award for the first time in his career this Saturday.

The Lazio striker netted his 35th goals in the Serie A to become the leading goalscorer in Europe top five leagues this season.

Lazio cruised to a 2-0 victory at home to Brescia on Wednesday night, as Joaquin Correa opened scoring for Simeone Inzaghi's men in the 17th minute, before Ciro Immobile added the second goal in the 88th minute of the game.

The 30-year-old Italian, has now gone past  Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski  who has 34 goals with the Bundesliga season already ended.

Only Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo who is third in the race with 31 goals can overtake Immobile at the top.

With one more final gameweek remaining to conclude the 2019/20 Serie A season, Cristiano Ronaldo will have to score many goals in their last match at home to Roma, and hopes Immobile fails to score away to Napoli on Saturday.

Ciro Immobile is one goal away from equalling Gonzalo Higuain's Serie A record of 36 goals in the 2015-16 season for Napoli.

Lazio are currently guaranteed a top-four finish, they are fourth in the league standings with 78 points, same points with Atalanta who are third based on their head-to-head record.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla striker Ciro Immobile signed for Lazio in July 2016, and only three players have outscored the Italian when it comes to league goals across Europe's top divisions, Lionel Messi (136), Robert Lewandowski (115), Cristiano Ronaldo (103) and Immobile with (102) goals.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is the highest winner of the award (6), have won it for the third consecutive seasons last year.
