Champions League Final Moved To Porto's Estadio do Dragao, Portugal.

The UEFA Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City will be played at Porto's Estadio do Dragao on May 29, UEFA has confirmed.

Earlier this week, the UK government had requested that the all-English final be moved from the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul to Wembley, after Turkey was placed on the 'red list' which makes it unable for fans to travel, as they would be required to quarantine upon their return at a government-approved hotel for 10 days, to cost more than £1500 per person.

The European governing body had wanted to move the final to Wembley but there were issues as the UK government refused to wave quarantine rules for guests of UEFA, sponsors, VIPs and international media who would be attending.

This would be the second season in a row the competition final would be played in Portugal, having hosted last year's final where Bayern Munich beat Paris St Germain at the Estadio de la Luz in Lisbon.

Portugal have been closed to supporters just like the rest of Europe amid the coronavirus pandemic, but that has been eased recently to allow 10 per cent capacity for the final round of League games this weekend, which prompted UEFA to move the final there.

The Country is also on UK Government's green list so UK visitors will be able to travel there from Sunday to go watch the showpiece game.

Speaking on the decision, UEFA explained the reason for the move;

 "After a year of fans being locked out of stadiums, UEFA thought that everything needed to be done to ensure the supporters of the two finalist teams could attend.

"The decision does not come without big regret for the work that the Turkish football authorities have done over the last two years to ensure the successful staging of the final in Istanbul.

"UEFA is grateful also for their continued partnership and cooperative spirit as well as the understanding they showed in this particular circumstance and will urgently look into future opportunities for the city of Istanbul."

UEFA President Aleksander ÄŒeferin also said;

“After the year that fans have endured, it is not right that they don’t have the chance to watch their teams in the biggest game of the season.

"Fans have had to suffer more than twelve months without the ability to see their teams live and reaching a Champions League final is the pinnacle of club football.

"To deprive those supporters of the chance to see the match in person was not an option and I am delighted that this compromise has been found.

"I think we can all agree that we hope never to experience a year like the one we have just endured."

Chelsea and Manchester City will be allowed 6,000 fans each at the final in Portugal.

Discussions between both Clubs, UEFA and other relevant stakeholders regarding ticketing and travel arrangements will take place immediately.

The Championship play-off final would have been moved to accommodate the Champions League had it been played at Wembley but that match will still go ahead at the stadium on May 29.
