Chelsea Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy Welcomed As A National Hero In Senegal.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy received a massive celebration from the Senegal squad and fans as he reports for national team duties.

Edouard Mendy who the Champions League in an impressive fashion keeping the most cleansheet by a goalkeeper in a single campaign.

He kept 9 cleansheets in 12 games and conceded only three goals, and two of those efforts actually made the shortlist for Goal of the Tournament.

Chelsea defeated Man City 1-0 in the Final at the Estadio Dragao in  Porto last Saturday with a lone strike from Kai Harvertz.

The 29-year-old became the first-ever Senegalese goalkeeper, and just the since African shot-stopper in 37-years, to win the Champions League or European Cup since Zimbabwe's Bruce Grobbellar.

Bruce Grobbelaar had won the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) with Liverpool on 30th May, 1984 when beat Roma on penalties in Rome.

Grobbellar won 6 Football League First Division, 3 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 5 FA Charity Shield, 1 European Cup and 1 Football League Super Cup with Liverpool.

Mendy flew to Senegal on Thursday after been given a few day rest ahead of his nation’s summer friendlies against Zambia on Sunday and Cape Verde on Tuesday.

Liverpool’s star Sadio Mane looked happiest of all to welcome Mendy and even asked for a selfie with the goalkeeper, who was draped in a Senegal flag.

Speaking about the reception he received, Mendy told the Senegalese Football Federation’s website afterwards: "I feel great joy and was very proud of the welcome they gave me, along with all the hotel staff and the people who work here.

"So I really want to thank them, it really touched me. I had imagined my return home after the victory and I did not expect that at all."

Mendy is not the only Chelsea player to have receive heart-warming congratulations upon reporting for international duty, with French trio N’Golo Kante, Kurt Zouma and Olivier Giroud getting similar treatment when they joined up with the French squad.
