The Wait Is Over: Canada Finally Clinch A Spot In The Men's FIFA World Cup For The First Time Since 1986.

Canada will play in the FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar later this year, the first time qualifying since 1986 (36 years).

The Canadian men's national team under head coach John Herdman have written history, after clinching a spot in the world's biggest sporting tournament following a 4-0 win over Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto.

It will be Canada's first World Cup participation since Mexico 1986 when they finish bottom of their group without scoring a single goal.

Canada missed out a chance to secure a spot in Qatar last week with a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica. It was Canada's first loss in three World Cup qualifying rounds and it snapped a six-game winning streak.

Needing just one point from the game against Jamaica on Sunday night, the CanMNT delivered a dominant performance in front of 30,000 fans who flew the country's flags flew proudly, with a few Ukraine ones dotting the sellout crowd.

Thanks to goals by Cyle Larin (13') and Tajon Buchanan (44') and Junior Hoilett (83'), and Adrian Mariappa (own goal) in the 89th minute, that saw them cruised past Jamaica, who were already eliminated from World Cup contention.

Canada sits atop the table in the final qualifying round, followed by the United States, which held the edge over third-place Mexico on goal difference. The United States hosted Panama and Mexico was at Honduras later on Sunday.

The United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama are all in contention for the final two automatic Concacaf qualification spots.

The top three finishers in the North and Central American and Caribbean region book the trip to Qatar. The fourth-placed country in the eight-team table, goes to an intercontinental playoff against a team who wins Wednesday's final from Oceania qualifying between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand.

Canada was ranked 73rd in July 2020 when the draw format was announced, has now improved to 33rd in the latest FIFA ranking, their highest ever.
