Football Veteran Giorgio Chiellini To Retire From International Football After The Game Against Argentina In June, But His Love With Juventus Will Never End

Football veteran Giorgio Chiellini has announced that he will retire from international duty this summer, just after the CONEMBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions match against Argentina at Wembley Stadium on June 1, 2022.



Though the Juventus captain, insist that he hasn’t decided on his future at club level yet amidst reports this could be his last season at Juventus.


The 37-year-old who still has has a year remaining on his Juve deal after this season (due to expire in June 2023), has been linked with a move to the MLS, as it remains to be seen whether he would continue with Juventus, retire or resume his career elsewhere next season.

After victory away to Sassuolo on Monday, Chiellini was asked if he was playing out his final weeks with Juve.

“My love affair with Juventus is not ending. It will never end! The love is so strong that as far as I am concerned, but also I think them, it will never end," he laughed while speaking to Sky Sport Italia.

“Of course, from now to the end of the season I do have to evaluate everything, talk to my family about what is best.

“Let's reach fourth place first and win the Coppa Italia, then we'll sit down with my two families – at home and Juventus – to figure out what is best for everyone.

“It was the same last summer, I took time and didn't sign the new contract until after the Euros. At my age, you can't look too far into the long-term, but that's only natural, it's all fine.

“I hope you can see that I am happy, relaxed and want to keep enjoying myself with my teammates, then we'll see."



The former Livorno and Fiorentina's player has been with Juventus since 2005 (17years), making 557 appearances, and scored 36 goals. He has also won a total of 20 trophies with the Bianconeri (9 Serie A titles, 1 Serie B, 5 Coppa Italia, 5 Supercoppa Italiana titles).

The Italy's Euro 2020 winning captain has 116 caps for his country, along with eight goals, and represented Italy at six major tournaments, reaching the final of the European Championships twice, first in 2012 when they list to Spain 4-0 in Kyiv, and most recently last summer when the Azzurri won the competition via penalties, beating England in the final at Wembley Stadium.

The centre-back who will turn 38 this August, wanted to play for Italy at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but things have changed and he is reconsidering his options after failing to secure a qualification ticket for the world biggest event.

"I'll play and I'll say goodbye to the national team at Wembley, where I had my best moment in my Italy career and perhaps my whole career, as that victory was special." Chiellini told DAZN after Juventus.

"I would like to say farewell to the blue shirt in a celebratory game like this.

"I'm sure this will be my last game with the national team. It's time to let the good players play."
