Manchester United have been working on a deal for Frankie De Jong since mid-May and they had been expected to conclude a transfer for the 25-year-old first of all this summer, but Lyon's move for Tyrell Malacia has forced the Premier League giants to act fast.

Man United turned their attention to Malacia who was supposed to be moving toLyon after having full verbal agreement with the French club, but United stepped in late offering Feyenoord €15m plus add-ons for Malacia, while Lyon's verbal agreement was €12m plus €3m in add-ons.

Erik ten Hag knows the player well, having come up against him in the Eredivisie, and the 5ft 7ins Malacia is an attacking full-back who is considered a good fit for the brand of football the new United manager wants to play.

The arrival of Malacia, who has won five caps with Holland, is likely to signal the end of Alex Telles' United career. The Brazilian failed to impress last season and United will listen to offers for him for the remainder of this transfer window.

Malacia has made 136 appearances for Feyenoord since making his debut in the 207/18 season and if he moves to Old Trafford he will compete with Luke Shaw at left-back.

Feyenoord sporting director Frank Arnesen told 1908.nl: "The agreement is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell. If he says yes, then a transfer to Manchester United is imminent."
