Modric who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham a decade ago, has gone on to establish himself as one of the club's greatest midfield maestro in the game, winning five Champions League titles as well as the Ballon d'Or in 2018.

He has racked up a total of 462 appearances for Madrid since his arrival at the Spanish capital for a reported £30m fee, winning 20 major trophies which includes (three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, four Supercopa de Espana, five Champions League titles, three UEFA Super Cup, four FIFA Club World Cup).

The Spanish champions announced on Wednesday that, Modric's trophy-laden stay at Real Madrid will continue for the next 12-months, having been initially due to become a free agent on June 30.

Real Madrid are continuing to build their squad under Carlo Ancelotti for the 2022/23 season, in which they'll seek to defend their status as Spanish and European champions respectively.

According to reports, Los Blancos will also consider extending Modric's contract through to 2024 if he can maintain the same exceptional performances next season.

The 36-year-old and 2018 World Cup finalist had stated earlier this month after winning the Marca Leyenda award that, he wants to end his career at the club, as Madrid is also like his home and that he always feels loved by the club’s supporters.

"I hope I can retire at Madrid. Madrid is my home. I feel very happy at the club, in the city, very loved by the people," Modric said.

"My family is also very happy, so I hope to continue for more years and hopefully finish my career here."
