PSG Trash Nantes To Win The 2022 Trophee des Champions. (WATCH HIGHLIGHTS)

Paris Saint-Germain trashed Nantes 4-0 to win the 46th edition of the Trophee des Champions.

Both PSG and Nantes earned the right to contest in the Super Cup after emerging champions in Ligue 1 and Coupe de France  respectively.

PSG reclaimed the Trophée des Champions after losing it to Lille last season, it's their 11th Super Cup, and ninth in the past 10 years.

The game which was played at the Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv on Sunday night, was manager Christophe Galtier first game in charge of PSG.

Former Lille and Nice manager Galtier replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the end of last season, after the Argentine was being criticised for their underwhelming performances, but the side now looked rejuvenated under the new boss. 

PSG were without star player Kylian Mbappe on the night, as he was suspended due to yellow card accumulation, but goals from Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and a brace from Neymar were enough to secure the title. 

Lionel Messi opened the scoring mid way through the first-half (22nd minute), after latching on to a through ball from Neymar.

Neymar then fired home a sumptuous free-kick from 22 metres in first-half stoppage time to double the advantage for PSG.

It was a welcome sight for the Ligue 1 champions, as they failed to score a single goal from a direct free kick last season.

Twelve minutes into the second-half, Sergio Ramos who signed on a free transfer last summer and injured for the majority of last season, scored with a cheeky backheel to make it three after Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont saved Pablo Sarabia’s shot.

Neymar was then fouled in the area by Jean-Charles Castelletto, who was sent off for the infringement, and the Brazilian converted the resulting penalty in the 82nd minute to make it a 4-0 win.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Super Eagles forward Moses Simon was in action but could not prevent Nantes who won the Coupe de France  from losing drastically despite featuring for 90 minutes, as Nantes failed to win their first Super Cup since 2001.

“We played a very serious game,” Galtier told Prime Video. “We expected a difficult match and the fact that the players approached it with a lot of desire, determination and seriousness helped us to win.”

It was Galtier’s first piece of silverware since he led Lille to the 2021 Ligue 1 title.

“We talk about stars, but they are above all players who want to win titles and trophies,” Galtier added.

“You have to go with them. But obviously with these world-class players, things are made much easier.”

PSG begins their Ligue 1 title defence at Clermont on 6 August, while Nantes play at Angers on 7 August.
