Nigeria's Flamingos secures a historic victory after defeating the United States of America (USA) at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup on Friday.

The Flamingos had reached the quarterfinal stage for only the fourth time in their history after finishing as runners-up in Group B.

The quarter-final encounter which was played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India was delayed due to adverse weather of lightning and Thunder.

Bankole Olowookere led girls started the game sitting deep, but following a foul on Amina Bello inside the box, the centre referee rightly pointed to the spot, with Omamuso Edafe converting the resulting penalty to put the Flamingos ahead as early as the 27th minute.

USA pinned back the Flamingos early in the game. With five minutes left in the first half USA equalized thanks to a goal from Amalia Martina Villarreal.

With both teams failing to find the winner in the second half, the game ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Faith Omilana made a number of crucial saves to keep the Flamingos in the mix.

A penalty shootout was needed to determine the winner, goalkeeper Omilana proved her class once again as the 16-year-old kept out two penalties to help the Flamingos beat the Americans.

While the Americans missed twice, the Flamingos only missed one of theirs to hand the West Africans a 4-3 win.

Edafe converted the winning spot kick to send Nigeria into the last four.

This would be the first time that the Flamingos will be playing in the semi-final of the Women's World Cup.

They are set to face either Colombia or debutant Tanzania in the semi-final on Wednesday, 26 October.
