Taiwo Awoniyi Named In The Premier League Team Of The Week

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has been named in the official Premier League Team of the Week compiled by legendary former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer.

The Nigeria's Super Eagles striker Awoniyi was the star of his side Nottingham Forest after scoring the decisive goal that earned them a 1-0 win against his former club Liverpool at the City Ground last Saturday.

It was Awoniyi’s third goal in 11 Premier League appearances for the newly promoted club, and it was manager Steve Cooper’s side’s first win in the Premier League since August.

Speaking to BBC Sport after scoring the only goal of the game, Awoniyi said, “For me, I’m happy but the most important thing is the three points.

“To score against Liverpool is a day I will never forget. I will always be grateful to Liverpool for scouting me from Nigeria and scoring against them is amazing.

“The game is over and now we concentrate on the next one.

“I think this team we stick together, we’re a family, the fans are always with us, we just have to keep on going.”

This is the first time he will be named in the Team of the Week following his arrival at Nottingham Forest from Bundesliga club, Union Berlin this summer.

The Team of the Week was published on the Premier League’s verified Twitter handle.

The 24-year-old has now scored three goals in nine league appearances this season.

Despite the win which is Forest’s second of the season, they still remain bottom of the table on nine points after 12 games.

Three of Nottingham Forest’s next five league games are against Arsenal (away), Brentford (home), Crystal Palace (home) before the winter's World Cup break in Qatar, after which they return on 27th December, to play Man United (away) and Chelsea (home).
