Domenico Tedesco Succeeds Roberto Martínez As Belgium New Head Coach.

Domenico Tedesco has been appointed as Belgium’s new head coach. 

The Italian-born manager also holds a German citizenship, as he was born in Rossano but grew up in Germany.

Tedesco succeeds former boss Roberto Martínez signing a contract with the Red Devils until after the 2024 European Championship in Germany.

Former Swansea, Wigan and Everton manager Martinez stepped down immediately after Belgium's so called 'golden generation' had a very disappointing outing at the World Cup in Qatar, which led to their early exit.

Martínez had a six-and-a-half-year stint as Belgium manager during which he guided them to their best World Cup finish with third in Russia in 2018.

The Red Devils also claimed third place in the 2018 Euros, and went into the World Cup as the world's second-ranked team but the ageing squad were well off the pace in Qatar.

Belgium won only one of their three matches and scoring just once, as they finished third in Group F that has Morocco who finished top, 2018 finalist Croatia in second, and Canada in bottom.

For Martinez it was the end of the line, as he announced shortly that he would not be continuing in the role. He stepped down in December, but has since been named Poortugal's new head coach.

Former Schalke, Spartak Moscow and RB Leipzig boss Domenico Tedesco has now been appointed Belgium head coach.

Tedesco told the Royal Belgian Football Association’s website: “For me it is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium.

"I'm really looking forward to the task and I'm extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.”

The 37-year-old had been out of work since leaving Leipzig in September.

He had joined Leipzig in December 2021. Leipzig won the German Cup and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season, but Tedesco was sacked in September after a poor start to the 2022-23 campaign.

Belgium open their 2024 European Championship qualifying campaign with an away match against Sweden in Stockholm on 24 March.
