Victor Osimhen Fails To Score, As Napoli Suffer Defeat At Home To Lazio In The Serie A.

Europe's in-form Napoli were beaten 1-0 at home by Lazio in the Series A on Friday night.

It was only a second defeat of the season, and first home loss for Napoli who are aiming to become Italian champions for the third time with their last success coming in 1990.

Prior to the defeat, The Partenopeans had won eight in a row and 19 of their last 20 games in Serie A, a run that began with a 2-1 victory away to Lazio in September.

Matias Vecino scored the only goal for the visitors in the 67th minute with an excellent long range strike from outside the penalty area at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The Uruguayan midfielder goal was the first goal Napoli had conceded in six games.

Serie A top goalcorer Victor Osimhen with 19 goals in the league, came closest to an equaliser but saw his powerful header from a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cross  bounce off the crossbar.

The Nigeria Super Eagles striker scoring run ends after eight games, as he was looking to score his ninth consecutive goal for Napoli, having failed to score against the Biancocelesti in their last two meetings, and he was also aiming to change that.

Lazio's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic also hit the woodwork with a free-kick, but Maurizio Sarri's team were able to hold on tight to their lead and ensured they ran out with a 1-0 win.

It is only the fourth time in 25 Serie A this season that Luciano Spalletti's men have failed to win (2 draws, 2 losses), and they still have to play Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan.

The win for Lazio, sees them move one point above Inter and AC Milan courtesy of a third successive victory. Though both Milan clubs have a game in hand. AC Milan play at Fiorentina on Saturday before Inter entertain Lecce on Sunday.

Lazio are now second in the table, but still distant 17 points behind Napoli.

Napoli next play host to Atalanta on Saturday, March 11.
