OFFICIAL: Liverpool Announces The Signing Of Dominik Szoboszlai From RB Leipzig.

Liverpool have completed the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig, subject to work permit.

The Hungary national team captain and midfielder who has a Steven Gerrard tattoo, will now wear the legend old No.8 shirt recently vacated by Naby Keita for the Reds, having arrived in the UK via private jet earlier on Saturday after Liverpool triggered the £60.2m release clause in his Leipzig deal.

Only Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Darwin Nunez have ever joined the Merseyside club for more money.

Szoboszlai signed a five-year contract which will keep him at Anfield until 2028.

He becomes Jürgen Klopp's second new addition of the summer window after agreeing terms and successfully completing a medical, following in the footsteps of Argentine's World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister who had earlier joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m.

Szoboszlai arrives at Anfield after two-and-a-half years in the Bundesliga with Leipzig, after joining from fellow Red Bull-owned outfit Salzburg in January 2021.

He joined Leipzig despite interest from Arsenal, and the versatile midfielder has since produced 20 goals and 22 assists in 91 games for the German giants in all competitions.

The 2022-23 season saw Szoboszlai hit double figures in both goals and assists, netting 10 times and setting up 13 more in 46 matches, winning a second successive DFB-Pokal crown 2022 and 2023.

The 22-year-old told the club website during his first interview at the AXA Training Centre: “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better.

“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started.

“A really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

On choosing to wear the number 8 jersey Szoboszlai said:

“I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard. That was a reason why. When I was a child, to be honest I didn’t watch that much football, but when it was Champions League, I watched and he was one of the biggest.”

At international level Szoboszlai has 32 caps and seven goals for Hungary, having made his bow in March 2019 against Slovakia.

He was elected as captain of his country in November 2022, voted for by his teammates and coach Marco Rossi.

Szoboszlai will be hoping to make his competitive debut for the Reds when they open their 2023-24 Premier League campaign away at Chelsea on Sunday, August 13.
