Wayne Rooney Close To Become DC United New Manager After Dumping Derby County.

Wayne Rooney has decided to take the reins as DC United's new head coach in Major League Soccer.

After leading the Rams through one of the most difficult periods in the club's history, England's all-time leading scorer Rooney, 36, resigned as manager of Derby County last month.

He oversaw the club's relegation to League One into administration during his first position in management.

Before joining Derby as a player-coach in January 2020, Rooney spent 18 months at DC United in Washington.

In November of that same year, after parting ways with Phillip Cocu, and with the club at the bottom of the Championship, he was appointed as the team's interim manager.

Three months later, Rooney was given the job on a two-and-a-half-year contract, which led him to announce his retirement from playing.

Had Chris Kirchner's contentious takeover of Derby been successful, Manchester United's all-time leading scorer was expected to stay in his position, but he resigned once it fell through.

The Eastern Conference's second-worst team, DC United, has been without a manager since April. On Friday, they were defeated 7-0 by Philadelphia Union.

On Tuesday, DC is anticipated to introduce the former Everton forward, who made his professional debut for the Toffees in August 2002 at the age of just 16.
